Have you guys seen the movie Serenity? For those of you who haven't, there is a character in it who has been brainwashed, and now responds to certain cues with programmed behaviors. Does manipulation with memory, and mind control/programming/whatever you want to call it, affect personal identity? If the memory is tampered with, does the person change? Soap operas kind of like us to believe that. What do you guys think?

i watched that movie last night and i think that it is not possible to control peoples mind if we could then we would have complete control ove rthose people
Who's to say that when we brainwash people we don't have control? We may have only wanted to change one aspect even though we had a chance to change everything. Look at the Operative in the movie. He was brainwashed to believe a certain ideal. Ask no questions and you will recieve no answers. You will have a blind belief in what you are doing, and believe it with a hundred percent. Operative believe what he was doing was absolutly correct, he thought he was making the universe better, one world at a time. The Alliance brainwashed him and had complete control over him, until he was able to find the truth, cause no one can stop the signal, and he reprogrammed himself to ask questions and he was no longer brainwashed and no longer under their control. So I think it might be possible to gain control through brainwashing.
Now for the question about identity. If you have a memory wipe, like in Eternal Sunshine, I believe that will change a piece of who you are. I believe that we are a mix of Nature and Nurture. If our memory is played with we will change a few things. For instance, if pizza was our favorite food and our memory was wiped and it seemed like we had never eaten pizza, well, our new favorite food maybe Beef and Brocolli. Same thing with movies and music. Though I think some of our personality is from what we are, not where we have been. I think we wouldn't be the same, but we wouldn't be too different either.
I think it is very possible to brainwash people, in fact the way I see it it happens everyday. Catchy jingles on commercials, logos, and advertising slogans all are a form of brainwashing that, if successful, make you desire to have whatever is being sold, whether it be Big Macs, diet pills, or clothing. Thats why I think parents sould be careful with the ammount of time they let their children watch tv, too much and they might go beserk, like River in Serenity, everytime they hear song on the McDonalds commercial.
