Hell
There are many theories as to what hell is. There is the popular view of Hell as a fiery furnace in which flames lick the bodies of its inhabitants, demons constantly torture the ravaged bodies, and Satan sits on a throne like a king. There is also the viewpoint of the living Hell. In this view Hell is more of a state of mind or soul. One would be considered to be in Hell if they were living in a life of sin. The best example that helped me understand this point of view was addiction. The addicts sins are there one torment and cause them to feel distant from God. Then there is the view that Hell is nonexistance or complete nothingness.
What is Hell? What is its purpose?

An addiction is a good analogy to use for Hell-where you are consumed by sin and yet the sin takes you farther and farther away from happiness. Like Seth said, Hell is the absence of God so simply having all goodness, all hope, removed from a person's life is Hell. And Hell's purpose is to punish those who rejected God. Or think of it as God leaving those who have rejected Him. However, I wonder what will happen in the end of times. In Revelations, I think, it talks about Hell being thrown into a Lake of Fire. I don't have my Bible on me now :(, so I don't know the passage exactly, but how would this Lake of Fire be different than Hell? (I need to take Theology...)
