Piggybacking on Ruth's post from a couple of days ago, does the Bible mention souls at all? I mean, I just did a concordance search, and yes, the word is used, but it seems to be synonomous with person, or being. Does anyone know if there are actual verses in the bible that imply there is a spiritual side of humans that is separate from the body--before the "Holy Spirit" indwells us? (Oh, yeah--and what the crap does that mean?) And if not, where did we get this idea in the first place?

I was thinking about this, too, when we had to write our dualism/materialism paper (but I didn't hit on it because I, too, have the same questions you do and zero answers!)
Have you tried looking up "soul" in Strong's Lexicon? (I think that is what it is called.) I did a quick search in (what is perhaps an unreliable online version) of Strong's Greek and Hebrew lexicons . . .
see:

I don't know any Greek, but I did take a semester of Hebrew, and I remember that one Hebrew word that we translate as "soul" means something like "breath" or "wind." I personally love that imagery! But I am getting off track here . . .
I guess I can only say to check out the lexicon, and see what the original word that some English person translated as "soul" means and see where else it occurs in the Bible and was it translated differently there?
sorry, those links got cut off. go to: http://www.eliyah.com/lexicon.html and search in "Strong's Lexicon" for "soul" checking "Hebrew" once and then search again and check "Greek."
